Kodachrome was as much killed by processing hassles as anything else.
Why wait a week, which was not uncommon to just a few hours?
The investment was huge to process it. And the chemicals were really
difficult to dispose of, with careful scrutiny by the EPA and such
agencies.
They fixed a lot when they went from K-14 to K-16, but there is no doubt
that it is a dirty process.
Kodak has been shutting down processing lines for some time, though. Each
time a line shuts down, delivery times get flakier, and quality seems to get
spottier.
While I still love Kodachrome, and still shoot the stuff as my slide film of
choice, the week to ten day delivery time makes it a tough sell to clients
who are used to E-6 turnaround of in this morning, out by lunchtime.
