Quite a few of us do, however they aren't just portable hard drive enclosures,
they are autonomous devices which can actively copy from the cards to the hard
drive without the need for external equipment. Some models even execute a
verify after write to confirm data integrity, some are fast to copy, some are
slow as a wet week and some provide LCD screens for image review and on
occasions MP3/video play-back.

They are generally great so long as the batteries/power source is reliable and
well maintained. Some use L0ion cells with relatively poor per charge lifetime
and others use conventional rechargable AA cells for power.

The one I have is a CompactDrive PD70X, so far I've found it fast, reliable and
very good on batteries. There are plenty of review sites on the net covering
these types of devices, if you are interested make sure you do as much research
as you can, I had another unit before this one that I wasn't so pleased with.
