My first suggestion is to change your attitude about photographing people. If your thought process is "I stink at this" then you're already setting yourself up for failure. You need to develop a more positive outlook and expect better results. You can do it. You may need to learn a few new skills but you weren't born with an automatic incapability to shoot good portraits. Tom's quick rules for good people pictures; 1. if you can see your subjects eyecolor in the viewfinder then you're already halfway there. 2. avoid harsh light 3. watch out for merges (nothing growing out of peoples heads) those three will get you decent snapshots all by themselves.
