he "knew" that he was supposed to stay away from strangers, so he did. yes,
he was old enough to have known better. they had an interview with the
father where he basically said, "that's my boy, dumb as %^&".

That kid was a STUMP! How old was he? Elementary school age... 4-6th
grade. Good grief, 1st he should not have kept wandering for hours. His
family was involved with Scouting... #1 rule when you're lost is to stay
where you are. 2nd, yeah right, he's lost and scared for at least
overnight, hears someone calling HIS name in the wilderness, and DOESN'T
KNOW if he should answer?
Something doesn't add up. It may be the kid's IQ, but there was all kinds
of holes in that story.
