I'm a collector of southwestern native american jewelry. If the pendant is 
native american, especially older southwest, the red stone is most likely 
coral. I've never seen carnelian used in southwestern native american older 
jewelry. Though appearances can be deceiving it looks like coral to me - the 
carnelian I've seen usually has a more translucent quality.
