That's likely a Rapier, which is a thrusting sword, not a slashing one. It's used much like a fencing foil, the blade is used to redirect the opponents thrust, not block swings.
I see... It makes sense... I suppose the issue here is somewhat cultural... The image of Pirate Bob instilled in me by Soviet Cinematography is similar yet different ;-).
