Pentax still sells several film bodies. The MZ-M, *ist and MZ-70 and
MZ-50.
Sell? Well, I doubt they sell a lot. Besides, hardly anyone buy these
camera for use with 200/2.8 lenses.
You sure about that? A 200/2.8 on an *ist with a battery grip sounds
like a very viable setup. Sure an MZ-S would be better, but a 200/2.8
isn't all that huge.
A 200/2.8 isn't exactly exotic glass either. 200mm lenses are pretty
vanilla, along with 300/4's they're pretty much the standard long primes.
I think a 200/2.8 is pretty exotic for the average slr buyer. I also
believe that the *stD appeal to two kinds of buyers; 1) entry level
users who buy kit lenses. 2) Pentax users that already own the lenses
they want. They only use the *istD because something better isn't
available. I believe there are very few who buys exotic Pentax glass
these days.
The DL (And to a lesser extend DS2) are oriented towards kit-buying
entry-level buyers. The D on the otherhand is explicitly a semi-pro
body, and the users thereof are going to want to put serious glass on
it. Personally, I lean more towards 200/4's myself (XR Rikenon 200/4 in
my bag), but I don't tend to shoot long lenses where the extra stop
might be needed. However, given enough room in my budget, I could see
picking up a 200mm f2.8 (Or even, I should dream, the 200 f1.8 USM from
Canon on the used market), I'd probably use it more than I would a 70-200.
