I was wondering if anybody has had any experience in sealing lens

Does this sound too crazy?

I am considering purchasing a lens that might have problems like this.
Due to previous attachment of something unknown to the lens
(and related barrel modifications) the barrel might
not be sealed completely against moisture/dust.

This is not the actual lens but the one I am considering has
a similar sort of "modification". The plate might not have a perfect seal:

Any thoughts?

Apart from what everybody else said: if you're not after a sealed lens, but simply want the holes covered I'd use fitting screws (if the holes are tapped) to fill them. If not, I'd take sanitary cement (is that the word: I mean the transparent or white stuff you use to seal the gap between a washbasin and the wall for instance). Apply sparingly, you don't want to fill the lens with the stuff :o) I never had the inclination to test it on lenses, but the stuff worked wonders to make my car watertight!
