If you are content to print no larger than 8.3 inches wide, the R800 at less than 400USD is an excellent choice. And, you get the benefit of the excellent Epson printer profiles. It uses 8 cartridges that cost about 15USD each. Fortunately not all need to be replaced at the same time.

On the pricier (35USD/50 sheets) premium luster paper an 8x10 still comes out to probably less than 4USD per print.

Very interesting discussion, really.

Are the ink cartridges priced about the same for low-end and high-end ?

Most of the current photo printers will do a decent job. What you get for
more money is not so much better quality (although some of the expensive
ones are slightly better than the cheap ones), as larger paper size and
faster speed.

If you move up to the big machines, you also get much lower operationg
costs.
It costs me somewhere around 3 dollars a foot to make 16 inch wide prints.
It seems to me it was costing me close to double that on my small Epson.
