Hi Bob,

There are lots of driving hazards at night - kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, koalas, possums, teenagers in hotted up cars and drunks to name just a few. I'm always careful when driving at night in country areas and have managed to miss everything so far - I've seen quite a few live and dead ones on the side of the road however.

The Great Ocean Road is a good trip, and there are some good sights inland on the way back to Melbourne that I have only seen signs pointing to because I have always had somewhere to go.

Thanks Leon,
Doing something like driving the Great Ocean Road sounds appealing. Renting a car and driving to places are something we often do. Last
night, my wife pointed out that kangaroos were mentioned as a serious
driving hazzard at night in the wilderness.

Hi Bob,

Others have made comments about various bits of Australia (and New
Zealand where they talk funny), and it's all true. The truth is that
Australia is so varied a place that 3 weeks is a short time to do it
justice. I've known people to spend 3 weeks in Tasmania (the little
island hanging off the bottom of the east side) and complain they wanted
more time there. I spent 2 weeks in Western Australia and only saw a
very small part (doesn't help when you keep stopping to take photos, but
that is life).

Almost anywhere you go once outside the cities will give great photo
opportunities - I'll mention the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, not far
from Melbourne (a bit cold in Sep/Oct for swimming, but the scenery is
still there). Some of the more "Outback" areas are a fair distance from
the capital cities and you may want to look at where you can get to.

A fringe benefit at my employer is an 8 week sabbatical every 10
years. I've been thinking of spending 3 weeks 'down under'. You
folks have convinced me it gets damned hot in Australia during your
summer, so I've been thinking of spring. And all those great pictures
of New Zealand have me wanting to go there as well.

My calculations have centered on sometime in September or October,
maybe even November, but I thought I'd ask for advice. Great scenery
and good photo opportunities are desired... plus I want to hear people
talk funny!!! :-)

Any advice as to time and places.
