OK, we seem to have reached a consensus that "professional"

Someone who is a member of a professional organization ) though

I tuned out of the professional thread, but don't agree with this consensus.  I'll sign up with the 4th definition of the adjective 'professional' given at http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term=professional : Having or showing great skill; expert.

Joining an organization (whose mission is most likely to restrict trade in the goods of the so called profession) or getting paid doesn't confer this status.

If you have "great skill" it will show in your work.  If you don't, it won't.  Simple as that. It doesn't matter if you get paid, it doesn't matter if you join a club.
