You can get what you want, but you need to set the drive up for it.

Windows XP limits the size of a FAT32 drive to 32Gbytes when formatting, they want you to use NTFS. Unfortunately, NTFS is read- only from Mac OS X ... you can connect it and read data from it, but it will not be writable. However Windows XP will read/write a larger FAT32 volume that is already formatted. Mac OS X's native file system format is not readable by Windows. Mac OS X can read/write FAT32 format volumes.

So must format the drive to FAT32 file system with Mac OS X

The way to do it is to have the data backed up elsewhere and attach the 120G Maxtor HD to the iBook. Use "Disk Utility" on Mac OS X, choose the disk to "Erase disk" using one of the MSDOS file system options. (There are details in the Disk Utility' online Help.) It is then a completely read/write capable drive for both Mac OS X and Windows, modulo whatever differences in filename restrictions might exist between Mac OS X and Windows XP.

                Hi folks.

I currently back up my pictures via CD or DVD and also on to a 120 Gig Maxtor HD,
external. If coming
from the Mac, i just copy the CD/DVD data on to the maxtor on the PC.

I was thinking of just moving the maxtor back and fort between the PC and the Mac, but
this one time, i
actually read the manual and from what i gather, cannot be done. With the PC i just
pluged it in and
away i went. If i read the manual correctly, if i connect it to the Mac, it will format
the disk to the Mac
and i will lose all my data.

Dont want that.:-)

Has anyone done this successfully or is the book correct.

Just thinking of having to not turn the pc on and just move the external btn computers,
but is looks like
i'm snookered here.
