Can't help you with the file format, but regarding your other
questions, the answer is "both" to both.
There are flavours to fit both different wallets, operating systems
and workflow setups. Here's a link to a site with a reasonably

There are advocates of all the big systems on this list. My personal
favourite is CaptureOne from PhaseOne, but I think it's a shame that
DxO does not provide support for Pentax.
