As a "late starter" myself, a little tip I learned the hard way (last week).

If your tank has a plastic reel, make sure it is 100% dry before attempting to
roll the film in. If it's not dry, the film bunches up and everything starts to
feel "crunchy". Not good.

Also, if you want to get consistent results, CALIBRATE. Write down everything
you do including temperatures, times, agitation method etc. Store the data with
your negatives such that you can go back over them at a later date and have the
data at hand. Have fun
