I agree. It can't be that expensive. They have just had a very sweet market up to now in which they were the only mfr. to offer such a product and therefore could charge what the market would bear.
I suspect that the difference between the two image stabilzation approaches only shows up with long heavy glass. No knowledge here, just guessing. Tom C. You can probably expect the price to come down instead.
