I have been using it for years in my own data-recovery tool: http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/doc/shot/dfsee_startup.htm But that is mainly aimed at system administrators and power-users, hardly typical computer users :-) There are more disk tools that use it, but indeed the majority of developers and users ignore it since the meaning can often be derived from context anyway ...
