Actually, it was their top of the line DSLR when it was introduced,. 
They then put a bunch of lesser cameras on the market.
The istD wasn't missing anything that would cause it to be considered a 
bottom end camera.
It didn't sell for bottom of the line pricing, BTW.

The istD is still the top of the line Pentax DSLR for a variety of 
reasons.
