Gary,

I have never had an MX apart far enough to get into the shutter speed display
dial so I can't say for certain how easy a fix it might be. There could,
in fact, be several different failures which would give this symptom. Download
the service manual for the MX from my web site at http://www.robertstech.com/pentax.htm
and have a look.

As for mirror lock-up, the only way to do it with the MX is the undocumented
"flick the shutter release button just right so the mirror goes up but the
shutter doesn't fire" technique. It's a little inconvenient but it works.
