Yes, it's a hybrid shutter, the actual physical shutter never exceeds 
its sync speed, shutter speeds beyond 1/90 are acheived by turning the 
sensor on and off. The D50 and D70 use this (the D80 does not). In fact 
the D50 and D70 will sync at all speeds, they are software limited to 
1/500 with dedicated flashes to prevent unpredictable power losses due 
to the flash burn being longer than the shutter speed (A full power pop 
on the SB-800 is approximately 1/1000 of a second in duration).
