My K10D turns on the Shake Reduction screen when I mount an A or K lens. I 
haven't tried an M. I've found it to be less noisy at 1600 than the *istD 
(which is probably the same as the DS), however the exposure parameters are 
somewhat different. The K10D seems to like dead-on exposures in multi-segment 
mode, while the *istD liked a half stop of plus exposure comp. But i'm still 
experimenting. NIght photography is not a major concern for me, so I'm 
obviously not sensitive to your problems. I did shoot some holiday  lights on 
my house the other night, and I was happy with the result, but I doubt that it 
would satisfy you. That's by no means a criticism. Much more recognition of 
your expertise in this area.

In any case, here's my night holiday lighting pic. It's with the K10D and the 
DA 12-24, ISO 200, f11 for 10 seconds.
