Shel - The "firmware" is really software that is stored on a special integrated circuit memory chip mounted on one of the green circuit boards. A chip like this is sometimes called an E-PROM - Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory. Think of it a kind of a solid state hard drive that only holds the operating system (firmware). It probably only has to have about 4-6 megabytes of memory, so it won't be physically very large.
