I think it's too easy to say that US intelligence services should have
known about this.  4 planes hijacked, even if there were 4 or 5
hijackers per plane, that's not many people.  Let's say these people did
all their planning in a foreign nation, or even if they were in the US,
did all the planning in meetings as opposed to by e-mail or phone or by
mail.  They had few (if any) weapons.   There was no need to rent vans
(for a truck bomb), or huge amounts of fertilizer (or whatever) for that
same purpose.

I can see a possible scenario where the number of people involved is
small, and preparations required little in the way of acquisition of
materials.

The very fact that this was so well orchestrated and executed shows that
we aren't dealing with stupid people.  They obviously knew how to keep
what they were doing under wraps.  I'm not sure that we can point a
finger at US intelligence - yet.
