Ann, try this...

...an American folksong in which a father is singing to a child who 
tries to put off bedtime by asking many questions? The tune resembles 
the old song "Who's Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Little Foot", and the only 
verse recalled (out of several) is:

"Why can't a mouse swallow a streetcar, Daddy?
Why, oh why, oh why?
Because a mouse's stomach isn't big enough to hold a streetcar.
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye."

The title may be something like "The Why Song", and it might have been
written by Woody Guthrie.
