There's certainly a very comprehensive summary of the K10D's features
and functions in that review.

I'm surprised that each features and function is not given a numeric
score that could be tabulated. IMO, it would be a lot more convenient to
just look at a single numeric score and see how the camera rates against
the competition. Yes, we do have "Highly Recommended (just)." That's
OK but rather know that the K10D is a 698.4 and the D80 is a 695.7 and
the EOS 30 is a 702....

Cripes - bankers do it, why not camera reviewers?

I do question the whole "Image Quality" aspect of the review. I really
question the idea that there is a "right" and and "wrong" about image
quality.

Relating things back to the film world, that's sort of like saying
Rodinal is bad because it makes for grainy images, while Microdol-X is
good because it makes for fine grained images. Or Rodinal is good
because it accentuates acutance, but Microdol-X is bad because it mushes
things up. Or, they are both bad because they are extremes but D76 is
universally wonderful...

Maybe one advantage of film over digital is that with film the image is
independent of the camera. With film, the camera is more or less just a
light proof box with a shutter and a lens mount. The image processing is
a separate and distinct step.

In the dpreview summations, there is the implicit assumption that there
is 'good' image quality and 'bad' image quality. In some respects this
is true - terrible noise or low resolution would be bad - but when it
comes to more subtle aspects of the image - do you under or over mask
when sharpening - it's a matter of taste. The reviewer seems to feel
that Pentax uses 'unusual sharpening' - you have to wonder what is
"usual sharpening".

What I like about Pentax is that they do what they think is right. I
tend to be somewhat unconventional (despite liking D76) so I'm glad to
see another player in the field. I have the feeling that if the K10D
produced results identical to a Canon Camera it would have gotten rave
reviews - but then, what would be the point of buying the Pentax over
the Canon?

A prior list member, who used Pentax Screw mount gear, used to dub
himself as a "fugitive from the law of averages." In the digital age,
I'm happy to be on the lam with the K10D.
