when I first got my lens and screwed the hood on, it fell off
immediately. There's a little catch at the end where after screwing it
on you push a little harder and it clicks into place. Are you saying
that it is loose even after you do that?

As for focus, I don't know. I think mine is ok with good contrast but
otherwise if I am doing close-up work or the light is dim, I usually
focus myself.
