Yes it's a mirror lens. I think it helped that it was fairly overcast and I didn't have any point light sources in the background. Had there been leaves on those branches, the situation may have been much different. The relative distance between the point of focus and the OOF background elements may have helped also.

I was pleasantly suprised, because I think the background shows the birds natural setting very well, it's not too distracting, and the subject still appears quite isolated from the background.

Overall I feel the $75 (IIRC) I paid for the used lens in like new condition was well spent. Thanks again.
