Back in 1992 I saw a brilliant play called Becket in London.
Derek Jacobi played Becket. The play portrayed it as Becket and
Henry II being best pals until Henry appointed him Archbishop
of Canterbury, at which point he started taking his role as
priest seriously, to the point of clashing with Henry. Henry's
plan to put one of his own at the head of the English church
had backfired, and that's why he had Becket killed.
