I've now looked around a little more inside files from the K10D
(a DNG and a JPG, created at the same time using RAW+JPEG).
Both the JPG and the RAW file contain Pentax Private Maker Note
data (in an EXIF MakerNote tag in the JPG file, and in the DNG
PrivateData tag in the DNG file), and in each case there is a
tag (tag ID 63) containing the two-byte lens identification code.

I would expect that your Tamron lens is supplying the value '0 0',
which will cause the "-- --" display; if you send me a (small)
JPEG file I can check this. It's also possible that the lens is
supplying a different code, but one that is not recognised by the
Pentax software.

One thing that puzzled me was the difference in behaviour noted
between in-camera DNG Files produced by the K10D and DNG files
created by the Adobe DNG converter from older PEFs. I now think
I understand what is happening - although Pentax identify their
MakerNote data with the prefix "AOC" (for Asahi Optical Company),
the DNG PrivateData tag produced by the K10D instead uses the
identifaction string "PENTAX ". This means that any software
that know how to look around inside DNGs created from older
PEFs (such as, for example, some of the Adobe products) will
fail to recognise the K10D DNGs - instead of the expected ID
string of "AOC" they will find the string "PENTAX ".

Note that this name change only happens in the DNG files; the
JPG files still uses the prefix string "AOC". I haven't looked
at a PEF from the K10D, so I can't be sure which string it uses;
my guess would be that it still uses the same tag structure as
the in-camera JPEG, and hence will use the "AOC" identification.
