It's distinct in my experience with Americans and dozens of other nationalities, which indicates that most people (including Canadians like myself) tend to talk about their country's flag, while Americans tend to talk about 'their' flag. It's a personal relationship at a much closer level, the flag is owned by the people, not the country.
