I agree, I've seen similar in vintage National Geo too. Since the
integration of the HDR facility in PS it seems that most HDR image
presented for scrutiny are pretty much only images that are well
overdone. I've been doing this for a while using scripts and other
systems and to me it was not so much of a filter for effect but a
pictorial tool. And if well utilized, a photograph could be produced
with far greater d-range than normal but still appear very subtle and
natural.

Granted the in-your-face-over-the-top HDR treatment can be well be
used to good creative effect but I've seen few examples where I'd
consider that's the case. I guess it's a bit like what a kid will do
if handed whipped cream in a can. Each to their own.
