        Possible theory for banding related to battery life:

        Sensor noise is due (at least in part) to random thermal noise 
associated with the temperature of the photosite.  Astro-photographers 
often cool their sensors with Peltier or liquid nitrogen to reduce the 
sensor temperature.

        Banding would tend to indicate some sort of *systemic* noise 
generation.  Possibly "hot spots" in the camera or sensor.  I remember 
seeing a link to some photos to a DSLR (Nikon 10Mp IIRC) where there was a 
lot of noise in the corner of an image.  Most likely a part of the camera 
that got warmer than the rest and produced more sensor noise.

        A dead/dying battery might be so because of use... and that use 
could be making warm areas within the camera.
