Above is sales report from early January.

As to one of the reasons why...

Canon loses market share in January due to previous strong performance: Canon lost a little market share at the beginning of 2007, but this was due to its strong showing during the year-end shopping season, meaning that it did not have to dispose of inventories. The top of the sales rankings are filled with old models from other manufacturers that have been discounted to clear inventories. In our view, this shows how successful Canon was at the end
of 2006.

A different report predicts Canon will regain market share, excerpt below.

On the basis of the new CIPA forecast, Canon has effectively indicated that it intends to gain significant share in DSLRs back to >50%. As such, it is likely to threaten rivals such as
Nikon, the No. 2 player with a 30–35% share.

Old numbers. What about 2006? Pentax current share of the Japan
market is 10%. Canon has dropped to 35%.
