Thanks to everyone who fielded my somewhat behind the curve questions concerning 16 bit and 8 bit photo manipulation programs. It helped me solidify my plans for the near future. Those being, to purchase Lightroom, wait to see if Gimp updates as promised, if not, eventually go to PS CS2, maybe this fall. I hope to get up to speed this year.
I was telling a friend this morning that printing my own photos has awoken my interest in digital slr's, which never really did enough for me. It must have been the darkroom aspect of film photography that got me going all these years (and still does from time to time, at least with b&w, my first love). Who knew?
