In the eighties I wrote an advice column for auto mechanics. Every
month I would deal with two or three service problems sent in by
mechanics. The column was in a magazine called "Motor" that was
distributed to service facilities and much of the auto industry
support. Car owners would frequently find the mag in the waiting area
of their service facility, so I received a lot of letters from car
owners. By far, the most troubled were the Peugeot owners. I received
literally hundreds of letters relating horror stories of blown head
gaskets and destroyed engines. They told me stories of multiple
repairs and literally begged for help and solutions. The only
solutions I could offer included expensive fixes, such as copper wire
O-ringing of cylinders. Few would be willing to pay for that and not
many service facilities were capable of doing it. The Peugeot owners
suffered their frequent failures. But not in silence.
