Just curious: Considering this was news years ago, what prompted you to post about it?
At my last job, we were a major Leica dealer for the Bay Area. Most of our Leica sales were for the M series stuff, but we had a very dedicated base of R users, including a couple employees. The people who used Rs, especially the last two models, swore by them: they're built like a tank, they're big but comfortable, they have all the features one needs, etc. A couple years before the shop closed, we were in the process of designing a Leica Boutique to be built inside the store. Camera West, down in Monterey, has a beautiful Leica Boutique (the first, I believe) that I saw around the time Reed's was planning theirs, and it blew me away. It's heaven for Leica users, and apparrently Leica was working with a very small number of camera shops around the country to build more boutiques like it. Sadly, Reed's boutique never happened. Quick on-topic note: towards the end, Reed's was working on a deal with Pentax to become a major Pentax dealer. It didn't happen either, but wow, it would have been a dream come true for me. I loved the M cameras, but I can understand that people would want Leica optics with the accuracy of an SLR. I figure a rangefinder wouldn't be ideal for shooting portraits, for instance. Two or three of our more well-off customers ordered the Digital Module R. I got to hold an R9 with the module attatched for about 10 seconds, not enough time to form an opinion, but I thought it was kinda nice. Hefty, sure, but that's the R series for you. It's too bad the DMR is no longer in production. I hope Leica comes up with something new to keep the R series going. Perhaps a digital-only R10, but smaller and lighter, to attract new users?
