I presume you have one of the dedicated Pentax flash units, the  
AF540FGZ or AF360FGZ ... ?

The camera fires a pre-flash prior to the mirror lifting to measure  
and integrate flash intensity with ambient light intensity. This is  
how the Pentax P-TTL flash metering system works.
