I have been thinking about that. I tightened to the point where I was able to pan without using much force. It could be interesting to retry with the head untightened.

Hey, Tim, as a comparison, I'll run through some tests with the in-lens IS on my new Canon 500/4 and the Wimberley sidekick (poor man's gimbal). All my nature-shooting Canon friends leave IS on all the time. I never did side-by-side with the 300/4 IS (old first generation IS) and a regular ball head. I'll let you know what I see and post the shots of IS on a and off.
