Shel: You're miles ahead of me in equipment readiness. I only usually have time for:
1) Sit down in a quiet place and think about what I'm going to be photographing. 2) Sketch out three or four shots I think I am going to want to look for. 3) Try to imagine whether any unusual technique is called for; if so, review how I might go about it.
