My lens buying decisions (Canon) have been affected by pictures I've seen
that someone took with a particular lens. So the gallery doesn't seem totally
off the mark to me. Although, sure, ads would help too. But I see it as a
fairly smart move on their part.

Remember there are still a lot of people who think if they just have the
right equipment good pictures will follow.

Marnie aka Doe ;-) Maybe even some on this list? Hehehehe.

No, the gallery is unlikely to be the principle deciding factor for
anyone, but it could be one of many. I found it interesting when I was
thinking about the Olympus to see what people wrote about it, what
pictures had been shot with it, what type of photographers used it,
what kind of pictures they took, and so on. These things all
contribute towards the decision. Putting this gallery up is an
extremely low-cost thing to do - it should be a powerful lever. Not
having something like this would say some very negative things about
the company which could contribute a lot to losing sales, in my view.

I personally wouldn't base my camera buying decision based on the fact that
a corporate website had a gallery of photos that I enjoyed... maybe some
would.

American Idol's not international ???? ;-)
