It works for me also. I shoot Pentax for the lenses, not the cameras.
Having said this, if one needs the feature set of a high end Canon to do 
what he wants, then this brand isn't appealing. On the consumer side, if one 
wants the cachet value of a higher end body, either in ones camera bag or 
not, then this is not the brand to buy.
I think what happens (this is from my retail experience, so is more 
anecdotal than factual), is that companies like Canon or Nikon can advertise 
trememdous bragging rights about what their equipment can do.
This puts them at the front of the lower end camera consumers short list, 
and often the consumer will give a Pentax little or no heed, simply because 
they aren't in the pissing contest.
It's probably gotten worse since the advent of internet and big box 
retailing, since now the consumer quite often doesn't talk to a knowledgable 
sales person before making a buying decision, and if they happen to find 
themselves on a forum such as DPReview, they will generally get the 
Nikon/Canon party line fed to them.
