Get yourself the old standby, a Cannonette GIII 1.7. You will probably have to 
refoam the back, not a hard job. For $50 or so you can find out if you like 
rangefinder cameras, I love them. Or if you are willing to spend that thousand 
get a Leica M3, in some ways they are nicer than the new ones. Cesar has one 
that is very nice, I wanted to walk off with it <grin>. I would start with a 
fast 35-40mm lens, as they lend themselves to close in quick and dirty 
photography, the place where RF's rule.

The only warning I can give is do not try to use it like a SLR, you will hate 
it if you do. They are another kind of beast altogether.
