I'm originally from Fall River, MA, which is on the RI border. I also
lived in Providence during grad school. When I was growing up, coffee
was the most popular flavor, even over chocolate. Coffee milk, coffee
ice cream, coffee milk shakes (called cabinets in RI). Of course,
Duncan Donuts are everywhere, even in eastern MA. In Fall River, DD is
the big coffee supplier. When driving with my relatives, they will just
suddenly veer off the road, hit the drive through for a refill of the DD
cup, and drive off. Of course, I grew up with their coffee and donuts
so I still love them. The only thing that saves my waistline is that the
nearest source is 30 miles away here in VA.

Actually, I worked at my Uncle's drugstore as a teenager, and it had a
soda fountain. We made our own coffee syrup. 20 lbs of sugar in a big
pot, and 5 lbs of coffee in a cheese cloth bag in a very large homemade
copper funnel. I forget how much how water we poured through. 7-10
gallons, maybe. And I even had some coffee syrup in my fridge now.
Autocrat brand, courtesy of a care package from my NE relatives.

Small Quahogs. (also called littlenecks), are steamed dipped in butter
and served with sweet corn, (this tastes best if the shellfish are taken

out of collected without a license, and the corn is stolen from a
farmers field), but they're still great anytime. Rhode Island is the
only place I've seen Coffee Syrup, a concoction much like chocolate
syrup, for making coffee milk. It's an interesting place...
