Maybe consider the W30, which is the waterproof one. This gives you some extra capability, i.e., camera to take into a messy situation, as opposed to just a little camera. I took a Canon DS700 (6MP) on a recent trip along with my DS. I finally just gave up and just took the DS. The difference in image quality is profound, and It was always better to take the DSLR. Maybe instead of a P&S digital you could invest some money in a second smaller camera bag appropriate for hiking. ;-)
