Arent all SLR lenses hand still hand assembled? They do not seem to be
the
type of thing where it would or could be cost effective to 
automate the entire lens assembly based on the low production numbers
and incredible difficulty to entirely automate the assembly of the
lenses.

They must have one guy sitting in a back room waiting for individual
long lens order to pop into his "build one now" pigeon-hole, but somehow
I don't think so.
