That sounds to me as though you have a bad contact pin, so the
camera thinks the lens has a maximum aperture of f8.  The first
thing to try is simply cleaning the contact pins/patches on the
back of the lens (and the corresponding pins on the body) to see
if that fixes the problem.

Another thing to try is using some different "A" lenses on the
camera, just in case it's a wiring problem on the body.
