Sony sold a bunch of bad image chips to various manufacturers a few 
years back (wasn't intentional ... they didn't find out they were bad 
until the chips started failing).

I had one in a Canon Point 'n Shoot digital the US Army issued. That's 
what its images looked like when it first started to fail. And it was 
intermittent as well ... until it finally quit altogether.

Check with Pentax. This may be covered by the Sony recall, which has 
been extended and updated AFAIK.

The Army told me to trash the Canon, but I just dropped it into a box of 
junk I shipped home. Later, when I heard about the Sony chip recall I 
sent it to Canon who repaired it under warranty.

The Army didn't want the camera back because they'd already written it 
off as destroyed.

I've still got it, and it was still working yesterday.
