I went on a Saab press junket to Sweden in 1981. Saab engineers demonstrated the Viggens short takeoff distance. It was truly amazing how quickly it got off the ground. The Swedish air force parked them in camouflaged hangers alongside highways. They were capable of taking off on a short stretch of two-lane blacktop.
