Many Photoshop users who have lots of plug-ins keep them in a folder separate from the standard location. If you have a look under Preferences>Plug-Ins & Scratch disks you can actually define an "Additional Plug-Ins Folder" location. Install all your plug-ins there, and just point PS to it's location whenever you upgrade.
