I use the date for Lightroom folder names, then use keywords and collections for searching, grouping and categorising. I don't convert to dng.
LR automatically creates folders using the date (not xxx_DDMM, but yyyy-mm-dd), and creates superfolders with just the year automatically (Import parameter=Organize: By date: 2007/2007-18-12).
