I use a dedicated tripod & mount for the 600. The tripod is a Gitzo 1548 carbon fiber & the mount is a Kirk King Cobra. I figured after spending this much for the lens, I wasn't going to take the cheap way out for support.
I also drape my left arm over the barrel to lessen vibrations. Sometimes I drape a coat/vest. When the shot allows I keep the tripod height to a minimum to maximize rigidity. All in all it is a fabulous lens as you are finding out, worth the effort for the right image. I had been to Denali numerous times and never felt I had the correct equipment until my last visit when I had the 600.
